On Friday, January 26, 2024, the Nairobi High Court overruled the Kenyan government’s move to send 1,000 police personnel to Haiti in response to a complaint brought by rival and previously failed presidential candidate Ekuru Aukot. “The National Security Council has no mandate to deploy national police officers outside Kenya,” the court judge Enock Chacha Mwita declared in his verdict. “Such a decision contravenes the Constitution and the law and is therefore unconstitutional, illegal, and invalid.” With this decision, the much-anticipated multinational force in Haiti to try to stop the gangs has been [temporarily] halted.
