Port-au-Prince, March 3, 2024 – In a press release published this Sunday evening, the Haitian government condemns the abuses of armed gangs in the country.

Their actions cause massive displacement of the population, including kidnappings, thefts, destruction of public and private property, as well as assassinations, among other acts.

The government cited as an example the attacks on prisons which led to the escape of thousands of prisoners. Deaths and injuries were also recorded among police and prison staff, the government deplored.

According to the Prime Minister, these actions are contrary to the laws, constitute acts of disobedience towards the police and endanger national security.

Consequently, the interim Prime Minister, Michel Patrick Boisvert, declared a state of emergency throughout the West department for a renewable period of 72 hours. This will allow the government to restore order and take appropriate measures to regain control of the situation.

In addition, he established a curfew throughout the territory between 6:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. Monday 4, Tuesday 5 and Wednesday 6 are affected. Likewise, this Sunday, March 3, 2024, from 8:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m., is also included.

Thus, the police were ordered to ensure compliance with the curfew and to apprehend all offenders.

The government refers to the decree of March 3, 2024 to justify this measure.
