The earthquake that struck the Grand’Anse region on Tuesday, June 6, 2023 at around 8 a.m. was followed by a number of aftershocks that were felt throughout the department, according to local Civil Protection authorities. These aftershocks caused damage, casualties, and general panic among the populace. Four individuals, including an 8-year old child, died as a result of the collapse of two houses in Jérémie in the Sainte-Hélène neighborhood. Jérémie’s College Sacré Coeur and Moron’s other school both sustained damage. At Morne Rampe, halfway between Jérémie and Les Cayes, the RN#7 is obstructed. According to initial estimates, 37 people were injured in the department when the emergency services rescued the families from the wreckage.
